One of the finest destinations to be found on the island of Crete. It is 8 kilometres north of Agios Nikolaos - the capital of the perfecture and is overlooking the Bay of Elounda .

It has fine sandy beaches , many good restaurants , lively nightlife and beautiful scenic views over the bay and of the tiny island of Spinalonga .The former Venetian fortress and later a leper colony is one of the most interesting sites to explore and can be reached from Elounda by frequently departing big boats (caiques).Also small boats can take you to Spinalonga, from the village of Plaka (right opposite the island) in about 15 minutes, at a lower cost.

From October 2010, we were watching the TV serial "The Island ", based on the novel by Victoria Hislop, about the years 1904-1957A.D, when Spinalonga was a leper colony and how all people, living on Spinalonga and in the area, were affected by this fact. The scenes of the film-serial were shot on Spinalonga island, Plaka, Pano Elounda (Upper Elounda), Vrouhas and the village of Fourni, places of exceptional natural beauty and special atmosphere.

From Elounda you can visit the city of Ierapetra and the magnificent island of Chrissi, the city of Sitia, the famous Palm Tree Forest in Vai, the monastery of Toplou, the Plateau of Lassithi and the cave of Dikti, the Aquarium in Gouves, the world famous Knossos and the Archaeological Museum of Heraclion, and lots of nice beaches in the south of Lassithi or close to Elounda.
